There have been posts on social media with false information about opting out of sharing your data with the NHS.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • There is no 30 September deadline for opting out of sharing your data. You can opt out at any time
  • NHS Digital will never sell your data
  • There are strict rules about how NHS can use your data. It’s only shared securely and safely
  • Shared data helps the NHS. It has been used to find the first treatment for coronavirus and for vaccine research.

For information and to choose if data from your health records is shared for research and planning, please visit the Make Your Choice page on the NHS website.

The deadline for registering your opt-out is 1st September, 2021.

If you don’t want your identifiable patient data to be shared for purposes except for your own care, you can opt-out by registering a Type 1 Opt-out.

You can do this online by downloading a Type 1 Opt-Out form and returning this to the practice.

This collection will start on 1st September 2021 so if you do not want your data to be shared with NHS Digital please register your Type 1 Opt-out with the surgery by 01 September 2021.

The data held in your GP medical records is shared with other healthcare professionals for the purposes of your individual care. It is also shared with other organisations to support health and care planning and research.

If you do not want your personally identifiable patient data to be shared outside of your GP practice for purposes except your own care, you can register an opt-out with your GP practice. This is known as a Type 1 Opt-out.

To register a Type 1 Opt-out, for yourself or for a dependent (if you are the parent or legal guardian of the patient) (to Opt-out) you can download the form here, once completed, please return the form to the surgery before the deadline of 01 September 2021.
